Measuring Instruments Directive
The Measuring Instrument Directive (MID) is a new European Union (EU) directive
aimed at creating a single market for measuring instruments across the EU. The fundamental
principle being that meters which receive a MID approval can be used in any other
EU country irrespective of where in the EU that approval was granted.
The MID covers a range of measuring instruments which include gas, water and electricity
Meters.
The MID was implemented on 30 October 2006 and new Statutory Instruments (SIs) are
currently being adopted to support the MID within the UK.
The new SI covering electricity Meters has been aligned specifically with the BSC’s
100kW threshold so all new Meters for the sub 100kW market are to comply with the
MID. Existing sub 100kW Meters can remain in service until 2016. Further information
can be found on the National Weights and Measures website
NWML / MID.
As consequence of the MIDs implementation for the UK, the Industry Metering Advisory
Group (IMAG) is considering the steps necessary to ensure that Meters remain accurate
over time. The current process of certification of Meters is conducted by Ofgem
which delivers assurance of long term accuracy however certification will not apply
after October 2006 to MID approved Meters. Further information of the IMAG can be
found on the
Ofgem website Ofgem Metering – Inservice Testing.
