BSC Insight: How to find your own insights from Supplier Market Share data

In this BSC Insight, Emma Tribe our Senior Product Analyst and Nick Groves our Data Steward Lead, demonstrate some of the insights that are possible using data from the Quarterly Supplier Market Share report from Elexon.

Using this report you can understand the average number of metering systems for each Supplier above a threshold and compare that to the total electricity demand for their customers. By analysing the data going back to 2016, you can see how the electricity market shares have changed for different Suppliers over the past five years.

BSC Insight: Update on Settlement Performance during the COVID-19 pandemic

In this Insight article, Mehdi Jafari  provides an update on the Settlement Performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. This BSC Insight follows on from a previous BSC Insight we published to show how COVID-19 pandemic had affected suppliers’ performance in 2020. Our analysis shows:

  • HH Performance of Import sites shows a slight improvement in 2021 from 2020;
  • HH Performance of Export sites was not affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and has always been higher than 99%. Note Elexon only monitor the performance of Import sites; and
  • NHH performance is also improving in 2021 from last year.

BSC Insight: Why Non Half Hourly electricity use increased in the first four months of 2021

In this insight article Emma Tribe, our Analysis and Insight Senior Product Analyst, explains how the colder temperatures between January and April 2021 increased Non Half-Hourly electricity demand. Through our analysis of electricity Suppliers’ Non Half-Hourly metered data, we have found that:

  • The first four months of 2021 were colder on average than the same months in 2019 and 2020;
  • There was an increase in electricity demand for Non Half-Hourly electricity suppliers during this time despite an overall decrease in electricity demand due to COVID-19 restrictions; and,
  • The long-term trend for Non Half-Hourly electricity demand shows that overall electricity demand is decreasing year on year.

BSC Insight: Update on Demand Reduction during COVID-19 lockdown

In this BSC Insight, Hussein Osman uses the latest data from BMRS and our internal databases to compare the changes in demand following Government advice that people stay at home with the demand patterns from similar periods in previous years. The graphs provide Initial Demand Out-turn data up to 17 May and Grid Supply Point Group Take (GSPGT) data up to 30 April. Our latest data shows that:

  • There was an 8% (0.8TWh) increase in net monthly GSPGT in 2021 compared to 2020,
  • There was a 21.07% increase in net monthly GSPGT in April 2021, in comparison to April 2020,
  • The daily average INDO in February and March 2021 was the lowest seen in the past 5 years (31740MW and 29456MW).

BSC insight: Forward Market Prices drive six CAP value reviews this year

We issued a consultation on changing the Credit Assessment Price (CAP) value on 17 May 2021. This is the sixth time in 2021 that the CAP value is going to change. This is the most CAP change events to occur in the first five months of the year since the CAP weekly monitoring process was introduced in 2007. In this BSC Insight article, our data analyst Mehdi Jafari outlines the reasons for this. Our Analysis shows that:

  • 2021 has had the highest monthly average reference price since 2009,
  • With five consultations issued on increasing the CAP, 2021 is the first year ever to increase the CAP value more than once during the first six months of the year,
  • As a driver for these CAP change events as a result of volatile forward prices, wind generation has been significantly lower than 2020,
  • This year has also been the coldest year since 2013; raising the demand levels and driving forward prices.

BSC insight: How Covid-19 impacts Load Profiles

There are two different types of data that the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) requires for electricity Settlement; Half Hourly and Non Half Hourly. Electricity Settlement happens in Half Hourly periods, so Elexon uses the profiling process to calculate Half Hourly data from Non Half Hourly meters. In this Insight article, Mehdi Jafari discusses the Group Average Demand data used in the profiling process and the way it has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
