Glossary Term: Act (The Act)

The term “The Act” refers to the Electricity Act 1989 which initiated the privatisation of the electricity supply industry in Great Britain. The Electricity Act also established a licensing process as well as a regulatory authority now called the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM).

The BSC references the Electricity Act 1989 using phrases such as “in accordance with the Act” or “under section 6 of the Act, as modified from time to time in accordance with the Act”. It should be noted that there have been further amendments to the original Act.
