Glossary Term: Wider Access

Wider Access is the term used for changes to BSC and NGESO processes that allows Data Aggregators, or Virtual Lead Parties (VLPs), to participate in the Balancing Mechanism (BM). BSC arrangements have always allowed customers to participate in the BM through their electricity supplier, but the Wider Access project allows them to do so through a VLP, or directly themselves (if they accede to the BSC).

The Wider Access changes also remove all BSC barriers to customers and independent aggregators participating directly in the Replacement Reserve (RR) market when it is introduced later in 2020. The Wider Access project allowed for the development of a smarter, more flexible electricity system in which VLPs could play a role.
